    Default Catch me if you can!!!

    So I' m driving home, on my way back from a meal spent with good companie. As I turn into the inter-section, what do I notice to my left, a police car with what must have been a 275-285# officer in it.
    What am I to think now. Here I am, just a meat cutter, and I'm in better shape than the one who is to "Serve and Protect" in the case of emergency. Maybe it is just me, but I feel that anyone in the position of pubice safty sould have the utmost in health and fitness.
    I know that not all police officeres are like this, but it seems as if the standered the way of the dognut as time served paters along.
    To all the publice safty personal, I do want to thank you for the hard job you do.
    Let know if I am way out of line.

    ( How often are you tested for health and fitness once your trianing is done???)

    First off, let's dump the stereotypes. Being a policeman is just like any
    other profession. There are the good and the bad. I didn't really get what
    you meant about donuts, but we don't all eat them.

    Physical fitness is usually high when the "new" officer starts their
    career, but over time it is lost. Why? Structured training when they are
    going through their academy or Depot. Even then, not all have a good level
    of physical fitness. Once out on the street, doing the job, various types
    of stress make you lose focus on what is important. Your own fitness.

    You probably notice that those officers and members in higher risk (i.e.
    tactical) jobs maintain a higher level of fitness. Usually because they
    have to, and some because they want to. I personally am more fit now than
    when I started my career. I lost focus for awhile, but fortunately came
    back to what is important. If you use it, you'll maintain it.

    Police work isn't always physically demanding. It is a lot of paperwork,
    and routine investigations. When the situation gets out of hand, then it is
    too late to "get fit." Some members have had experiences that change their
    whole outlook on life and their level of fitness. Others just go on with
    the same "out of shape" body and lie to themselves about their ability to
    do the job. If I can't look after myself and my partners, I am useless to
    the public. Everyday is a challenge to fight off complacency - because
    routine sets in, and the occasional violent incident at work just passes

    Enough rambling. Point is, we should be able to meet the reasonable
    expectation of being physically fit. But "should" is the active word. In
    reality, it just isn't so.


    P.S. - if you use abbreviations like: nfar, ch, soc, 1624, and 1393 - then
    we work for the same Force. Let me know if you're out there.
