I think that having multiple variations of an exercise available is a good thing. I think this is an excellent variation that woks things from angles that the more usual variations miss.
Speaking of the "standard issue" TGU....is there a GOOD video out there showing the latest most accepted TGU? It seems like this has been in quite the debate lately, and I don't know that I've seen the One True Method.
(god help me if this turns into another TGU debate thread)
About 4 years ago, I believe everyone was doing this style. It's been updated since.
I used to teach this to people who had trouble getting TGU done, not anymore.
It's easier than current RKC recommended one.

Since I'm still a beginner still building core strength- I use this version while training (w/lighter bell) to do the current 'bridge' style. I figure getting some full 'get up' reps can't hurt.
