Reminds me of a great book
Ten years ago or so, Jack Trout wrote a terrific book, Big Brands, Big Trouble in which he described how large organizations stifle organic growth and lose market share to upstart competetors due to the "NIH", or not invented here, attitude. Fortunately, I don't believe the NSCA suffers from such an attitude.
I have seen NSCA sanctioned workshops on kettlebell training, so it's my take (and believe me only my take) that their belief in KB training, though perhaps tepid, is very present. Most of us here on the DD Forum are (proudly) KB chauvanists and represent a small, but growing segment of the fitness community. As our segment grows, thanks to John and Pavel and the talent pool they've attracted, I have very little doubt the NSCA, as well as other organizations, will give our little group the repect and recognition we feel we deserve, but as of yet, not received.
The NSCA, like the RKC promotes all kinds of cutting edge ideas. To be fair to them, Gray Cook is presenting a section on FMS at the convention. CK-FMS is perhaps the most important new part of the RKC system. Senior RKC Jeff O'Connor made this point about as clear as glass this last weekend. The RKC has moved from a community focused on strength and conditioning to one where strength, conditioning and movement now form a powerful equal sided triangle. As we evolve this "product", the Hard Style system of training, more and more groups will see the value of what we have to offer. It's why we continue to be the Gold Standard in kettlebell training. Just because it's NIH, doesn't mean the RKC won't adopt it, as long as it forwards and doesn't compromise our commitment to Hard Style.
As a very dear friend said, once we start to think less like powerlifters and bodybuilders, and more like athletes, the more we will grow, as individuals, as leaders, and as a community. That doesn't mean I've stopped training to press the beast, and it doesn't mean I will never do a bicep curl or use a PecDec again, it just means, that, in order to be a better leader, I need to move in all three directions now...all right, I won't use the PecDec.
My opinion, mind you.
