I just finished Power to the People, but Pavel said this about the two handed barbell military press "The side press is a lot easier to learn than, say, a proper two arm military press."
Does Pavel ever touch on what a proper two handed barbell military press should be in any of his other books??? Is it the same techniques as kettlebell presses with Power to the People techniques overlaid (tight abs, tight glutes, tight quads, powerful grip, pull down with the lat etc etc)
Whether or not the barbell military press is easier than the side press is debatable, but if you're looking for resources as to how to do them, there's plenty written about it and clips on youtube. And yes, the same high tension techniques apply. Don't forget to visualize pushing yourself away from the bar, bell or whatever, rather than pushing the bar away.
Imo stronglifts is just some guy changing Rippetoes SS program around. They pretty much admit it. There is some decent information on that site I guess but why not just go to the source?
The book Starting Strength goes into tons of detail on the overhead barbell press. He has a DVD out as well that is filled with videos of him correcting common mistakes in the basic barbell exercises.
You can find a ton of information on proper form on the SS wiki.
Yeah, just buy Starting Strength and you'll have all the information you could ever want on the barbell press. It's just an EXCELLENT book.. far and away the best barbell technique book ever written. It's a big book that covers the "major" lifts in great detail. Pick up the DVD, too, and you've got your bases covered in that department.
I'll third the recommendation for Starting Strength. It's what got me away from the silly, sporadic stuff I used to do and into something that actually produced results.
Rippetoe does, however, teach active, rather than packed shoulders on the press. I found this thread when trying to figure out the difference.
Com. tux1234, in PTP Monthly I wrote a double issue superfeature on the standing press as it was done in the 60s in the USSR. We are about to release an anthology of PTPM articles as a book, probably in August or September.
