    Default Connective Tissue Strengthening

    Does anyone know any exercises to strengthen the underlying muscular connective tissues (fascia, tendons, sinews, etc)? I know that they do this in Old Yang Style Taijiquan, and some other internal arts, which is how older practitioner can throw around young martial artist like rag dolls.

    Ballistic exercises, like kettlebells will work the tendons really hard, especially things like hanging snatches, but you have to be careful, as connective tissue adapts slower than muscle, and heals very slowly if you overdo it. In Russian martial arts, we use very slow bodyweight exercises to strenghten connective tissue and teach the initially very abstract notion of "working with tendon instead of muscle". Essentially, take a basic exercise like the pushup or the squat, take 30 seconds or more to go down, same time to go up.

    Tissue development, relatively any tissue, is a matter of adaptation to demand (SAID principle and Wolf's Law). The body lays down tissue under lines of stress (Wolf's Law) as a matter of protection for survival. Therefore, repetitive load over time will create adaptations, or thickening, in the tissues regardless of type (connective, musclular, boney, etc..).

    Very interesting about the ballistics exercise. I'm going to assume that the slow movements in the systems bodyweight exercise and taijiquan forms have roughly the same effect on tendon strength. Am I correct?

    Another thing recommend by the old-timers for tendon and ligament strengthening was heavy partials and supports. You can't really argue with their results so including some type of these exercises will help.

    I've been doing isometrics lately, of the Alexander Zass and Mighty Atom grade, but I can't really feel much worked. I've noticed large improvements in definition and not much muscular hypertrophy... which is what I'm going for, not to mention the underlying tissue is insanely stronger than the muscles themselves. Something else is that I don't know what the limit is because I don't really 'feel' like I have done much afterward. Any suggestions?
