I believe that the gym is the alternative to bars and taverns for many people to meet people. A woman meets a man in the gym and she doesn't feel threatened or pressured...after all we are all here to work out right? Men can flex for the girls and not feel out of place.,..after all its the gym right? Its easier to strike up a convo or put on your best James Dean...and you won't get drunk and make a drunken ass out of yourself...I tend to think that people who go to the gym today for some serious strength training or conditioning, are the ones looking more and more out of place than those socializing...Then you will have those who will even text message when they are on the treadmill...Dennis

And social interaction hit's a new low.
It is amazing to what levels people will go to stay connected to others while disconnecting themselves from the 'real' world.

for a slightly different perspective.
There's a workout tracker proposed for this thing, yes?
Well, if we consider the effect that the nike ipod foot thing has had on running, that might not be bad, designed right. Folks share their runs with the nike thing, and it can get a wee bit competitive with social pressure (a) to do the run and (b) improve.
so if this becomes a social phenom, it might encourage actually more attention to the workout rather than less, if you can virtually run with or against a buddy.
Also a lot of hotels have tv screens on their gym bikes. When i'm on the road, doing interval work on hotel bikes, i appreciate having a private screen rather than a gym-wide blaring menace, and being able to have something happening that's entertaining to make the time of the grind pass.

A local gym here has bike "simulators", they have a screen with virtual tracks and trails and the resistance adjusts accordingly to whether your going uphill, downhill or what not, and you have to steer. Kind of interesting.

Gotta say, that thing looks hella cool.
If I had the money and the space, I'd buy one right away.

Careful now, I understand that it is longstanding party policy to en-gulag those caught using gym machines.
