    Funny this thread should appear.I just got a hard copy of Matt Fureys' Combat Conditioning book.I greatly enjoying practising the hundu pushup and squat at the ends of my regular workouts.I do a little yoga and find these movements a nice fit.(i do other stuff too,all bodyweight work)
    Btw,does anyone use the royal court(hundu pushup,hindu squat and bridge),as their regular workout?What are the pros and cons?

    I did years ago. Pros are that they are indeed nice movements, strength with mobility worked into them. The cons are that it won't take long until you can knock off a lot of reps (I worked up to hundreds of Hindu squats) after which it won't do much for strength.

    You can of course go Naked Warrior on them and start do one arm Hindu pushup and such, but that's a whole other exercise that needs different preparation than a hundred Hindu pushups. Never seen a one leg Hindu squat though!

    Understanding the ridiculous numbers of dand and baithak performed in Indian sandpits requires an understanding of Indian physical philosophy. The Pehlwani were not merely physical athletes but moral exemplars of health, celibacy, toughness, and camaraderie. Every aspect of their lives, from diet to sleep to training, was micromanaged.

    High repetitions of the dand and baithak were intended to test abstract dedication as much as concrete endurance. Because their goals were not strictly physical, physiological claims about the efficacy of thousands of repetitions per day should be taken with a grain of salt. The point of diminishing returns in these exercises can indeed be reached.

    That said, the dand is a great movement for flexibility, joint health, and mobility.

    You will also find that many of the indian wrestlers experienced debilitating joint issues as a result of their physical regimen. Not uncommon for them to develop arthritis very early.

    This doesn't surprise me in the least. My shoulders hurt when I got to 2 sets of 20 Hindu push-ups. I have bad shoulders, but they're not that bad.

    I would actually never recommend doing 2000 Hindu push ups a day; this is simply a hyperbole.

    However, I am thoroughly convinced of their value for developing strength, endurance, and mobility.

    They are a perfect exercise to grease throughout the day in sets of moderately low reps; and to add into the end of a workout

    Yup,that's pretty much what i thought.Maybe once i get finished with C.C.....

    One arm hindu push ups have become a favorite of mine, the one leg hindu squat certainly sounds like an interesting concept...
