Default Hardstyle Friendly Kettlebell Meet in NC

There will be a unique kettlebell meet at Ross Gilling's Edge Gym in Rutherfordton, North Carolina on April 21. Hardstyle lifters should find it appealing- read on.

The meet will follow the "American Rules" format of USA Kettlebell Lifting. Under these rules, four lifts are contested: the double half snatch (snatch two kettlebells, drop them to the rack, then snatch again), the double jerk, the snatch, and the one arm long cycle clean and jerk. Competitors may compete in as many or as few of these lifts as they choose- awards are given for each lift. Flights last 10 minutes, like in traditional girevoy sport, with one exception- you can put the kettlebell down and change hands as often as you like, as long as you don't leave the platform. Like the SSST, but with multiple lifts and a competitive format. At least 30 minutes rest is provided between lifts.

These rules are designed to introduce a competitive kettlebell sport to kettlebell lifters who are not accustomed to one arm switch, or resting in the rack. When the clock stops, the lifter with the most reps wins. Simple enough. This format has been used for a meet or two in Denver, and people seemed to really enjoy it.

Because this is a new format, we are trying to get people in to give it a try. The meet costs just $25 for as many lifts as you would like to attempt. Certificates will be awarded in lieu of medals at this price. The meet is sanctioned by USA Kettlebell Lifting. You can RSVP, and pay at the door. Reservations are appreciated, but not necessary. Lifters who choose to lift according to traditional rules can also test for rank with USAKL.

If you are in the Southeast, come and lift, have a great time, and meet some fellow lifters. Gain some experience, and try something new. You will find it very fun and accessible to people who have been training hardstyle with multiple hand switches, intervals, etc.

You can check out USA Kettlebell Lifting at www.usakl.com (this is a sport promotion and ranking organization, and is not a competitor to DragonDoor, as they do not offer certification. I hope its alright to list this here.) At the moment, the USAKL site lists the meet as April 22, but it is April 21. Weigh in starts at 8:00, lifters' meeting at 8:30, first flight starts at 9:00.

    The gym website is edgefitonline.com

Steve, what are you competing these days? and what do you have in mind for this meet? I have no idea what I would do in a format like that. I couldn't say what my pace would be with unrestricted hand switches and rests. My sport of choice is double LC, and it's not being featured at the event. I don't think I can prep for a different event and rule set this close to Cyrus' AKC meet in June.

[SIZE=2] My thread "Guest User? Really" prompted some 6 pages of discussion on why Pavel's user account had been changed to "Guest User" status. John Du Cane answered in a forthright manner, and I thanked him for his professionalism in this very forum.

That entire thread was removed from the forum on or around August 26. I've been an HKC and an active, outspoken member in good standing for some 3yrs now, but I don't support this sort of censorship. Look for me on the public web.

    John,
Are you in Charlotte now? I didn't know that Cyrus Peterson was holding a meet in June- I'll have to look it up. My training these days revolves around the kettlebell snatch, the powerlifts, and bodyweight drills, along with martial arts. At this meet, I'll be competing in the snatch, and probably the one arm clean and jerk. You are right- double long cycle is not contested at this meet. You could do one arm long cycle, and just view the meet at a fun get-together and workout. If you have your sights on an AKC meet in June, I certainly would not scrap your training for this meet. I hope you can make it out!

Yes, moved to Charlotte just a couple months ago. Been doing long cycle and some barbell support work at an Elite Fitness gym nearby. I may try to make that meet, at least as a spectator.

Very cool idea, if I was nearby I would come try it out. I particularly like the double half snatch, that has a lot of appeal. I'm betting that if any GS guys enter, they're still going to dominate, but it defintiely creates a more even playing field. Good luck with it, hope it becomes a regular event.

Welcome to the state! It would be great to have you there! I looked on Cyrus Peterson's page, but did not see anything about a meet in June. Where could I find out more about that?

Yes, I think it will be a lot of fun. Nico Rithner, of USA Kettlebell Lifting, came up with the idea as an intro to competitive lifting. He expected to take more heat for it from GS people than he has- so far, people have been quite receptive. He calls it "American Rules" to differentiate between his format and traditional GS.

I got that directly in a couple messages from different people. Look on Advanced Training Concepts' Facebook page for the "ATC ThrowDown" event.
