Default Odd realization -nasal breathing: breathless but not out of breath:

    Hi Comrades,

just wondered if anyone else has experienced this. I have always struggled with nasal breathing (for in breaths) during swings, snatches etc, finding myself to quickly be out of breath. However, determined to improve my capacity I tried it again the other day and really focused on what was happening with my breathing and work capacity. Whilst doing this had a strange realization that whilst I again felt breathless', in actual fact I wasn't, as my heart-rate was good and I was not struggling at all. The feeling of 'breathlessness' was confined to my throat, and my previous tendency to 'gasping breaths' was to fill my throat and address this feeling (even though it didn't actually improve my work capacity/performance, indeed it reduced it as my sensation of 'gasping' seemed to act as a cognitive feedback that I was struggling).

Probably an odd thread but it was such a realization for me on he importance of really studying and listening to what is happening in your body and how what I thought was happening and acting as a barrier was incorrect.

Again , just wondered if anyone else had experienced this sensation of 'throat breathlessness' with nasal breathing.

    Learning every single day Comrades

It's a great article, and the Gym Jones article he links to is also a good read.

I've been doing nose only breathing for a little while now but these breathing ladders seem to really teach you to control your breathing.

They are also a very sneaky way to do a lot of volume in a short time and with little pain.

I did a 1-25 ladder the other day in just over 20 minutes, which I added up afterwards was 325 reps.

    Next I want to try 1 - 20 - 1 which is a nice 400!

I started running again this year and after reading an article on breathing only through the nose I began doing the majority of my runs nose-breathing. It's been very hard for me because I often have the "throat breathlessness" that the OP mentioned. I think it's really helped me utilize the oxygen that I am able to take in though - both when strictly nose-breathing and when I allow myself on some runs (usually a time trial) to gulp air at will.
