This is a fun thread. I never went to prison but did spend 24 hours in the Oceanside Calif drunk tank for drunken brawling and creating a disturbance. This was back in 1977 when I was a 22 yr old, 180lb Marine Corporal. I was pretty tough back then but lacked alot of sense - hense the drunk tank. I had bloody knuckles and facial bruises and was sporting Irish sunglasses and I tell you the other drunks in the tank were actually afraid of little ole me..hehe! I was the most menacing looking hombre in the hole, but to be honest the others in the tank with me were just a few skinny college kids and a couple of old winos in there 50s. I actually had one kid beg me to not hurt him. I had no plan to - just wanted to have my plt sargeant to get me released asap.
I have no illusions though. Real prison is serious. Getting from one day to the next is alot about how you comport yourself. Learn the rules fast. Stay low and don't stupidly make yourself a target. ..Dennis

    ^This.

You won't be able to defend yourself against multiple attackers. Having never "done time", I'll go ahead and assume that a prison is not a McDojo and that any training in 'real combat' or Krav Maga you engage in during a lifetime of sheltered existence will be useless. Even if you somehow manage to overcome two mentally deranged criminals trying to rape you or beat you up in the shower, next time there'll be three or four of them. So it's not like you can ever win.

However, in six months you can prepare for prison in the following way:

Research and prepare the notes for your yet unwritten novel. Plenty of free time on the inside - don't waste it. A well-stocked prison library should have enough reference books. Plus the controversy of a book written by a man in prison will boost sales.

While you're at it, think of a good pen name.

Read up on psychological coping mechanisms.

If possible, make provisions for the people you leave on the outside so as to not cause them financial hardship during your prison stay. Put your affairs in order. Settle any outstanding credit card debt, etc.

If you have accounting / tax accounting / financial advisory / legal skills, think Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Plenty of people in need of financial management assistance on the inside, most with families to feed on the outside. That'll earn you much more respect than trying out some submission grappling nonsense on a six-foot-three, 300-lb. tattooed White Supremacist who's in the mood for love and intent of calling you Brenda.

This is a good idea, a publisher should try this.

I am sure it would be a deeply personal experience, I am not sure. I will check into Epictetus, it sounds interesting.
