Working with lighter and lighter counterweights on your pistols is self-correcting - you'll either improve your ankle mobility, ability to contract your abs more, or whatever your limiting factor is, or you won't be able to do it with the next lightest weight.

The pistol is a high-tension exercise, at least at the beginning for most people. I remember that my biggest focus was on reaching forward strongly - that's what got me over the hump. I'm not sure that the lighter and lighter weights actually improved my ankle mobility even though my ankle mobility could use some working on - I think I just got stronger and was able to compensate for my lack of dorsiflexion.
