    Default Something I'm trying

    I haven't posted on here in years. My history is that I had been a competitive powerlifter for nearly 40 years just retiring in the last couple of years. I'll be 61 in just a couple of months and the heavy weights have finally been catching up with me telling my body that it's time to make some changes. Kettlebells have been a part of my training since about 2005. I have several of Pavel's books and I just bought RTK even though I have been using double kettlebell work for some time.

    My goal now is not to lift heavy poundages anymore as it is definitely taking its toll on my body and my recovery is no longer what it used to be. Even moderate squatting causes soreness that lasts for 3-4 days. This has caused me to reexamine my training goals. I no longer care about lifting WR weights, but I do want to retain strength, improve my athleticism (I pulled my hamstring twice this summer in a church softball league), and increase my energy levels.

    I have been trying to apply different programming methodologies to my kettlebell training. After going through RTK, I decided to revisit the ladder method of training. However, I wanted to try to do something different to make the workout a little more interesting. My goals for the workout was to be in the gym for no more than 45-60 minutes and I want to incorporate both kettlebell and bodyweight exercises.

    My main exercise might be the double kettlebell press. Today, I did 5 ladders of 4 rungs. After each rung in the first ladder, I did inverted pullup rows for 5 reps. I've also used pullups here. In the 2nd ladder, I did 5 dips after each rung. In the 3rd ladder, I performed 5 pushups after each rung. The 4th ladder was goblet squats and I've also used box jumps. The 5th ladder was sit-ups.

    Following these ladders, I did the T&G KB DL and alternated dumbell curls with those. I've also used the double KB squat instead of the DL.

    I have found this to be a very challenging workout for me, but right now, it seems to be providing the training effect that I'm currently looking for.

    I am a few years older than you and know what you mean. At some point I will need to let some things go and adapt to the circumstances. There will be a point where power lifting will be replaced with BW and mobility drills and perhaps kettlebells. Yes I will need to hang up my barbells in the future. A few years ago I visited the local gym for a few weeks on and off. You know what? I do not recall seeing any men my age lifting - (heavy lifting) barbells. Most men in their 60s just don't do it...Dennis
