Corn? In the wrong hands now, but not as evil as, say, meat from Chicago circa 1900.

Bread is in the same basket (ha!), or at least a similar one. In movies about olden times beggars and criminals were given crust of bread to eat. In context of today, we'd say that's bordering on irresponsible. Back in that time, though, flour could not be refined as it is now. Crust of bread was actually nutritious enough to sustain life. What most people call "bread" today is so far removed from what bread has been historically it's almost not the same thing.
Same for corn. (And it could be very well argued that corn today
is as evil as meat from Chicago circa
The Jungle era, not that the industry today is much better…). US Agribusiness corn is not maize. The vast majority of it is unfit for human consumption. That which makes it to the supermarkets is merely the un-evilest of what's produced. There are very few things in this world which I hate. Monsanto is one of them.
