Great basic articles on how to get big.

How to Gain Weight - The Final Answer

Why Aren't You Getting Bigger - And How To Fix It

Your routine should also be based on heavy compound movements and you should have a lot of rest aside from your workouts.

You sound like your routine is not a focused routine and you are doing something even on days that should be rest days like swimming, etc. This will all get in the way of being big and strong fast.

There is no real secret. Lift heavy and simply while consistently adding weight to your lifts, eat a lot, sleep a lot.

it is common sense that you need to eat more to provide the building blocks for the muscles you want to add. Is there a consensus on how much exactly more than necessary someone should eat? I think someone on the forum in the past said 500 kcals is the ballpark figure; anything more than that gets stored as fat.

Is that true? It sounds true. For me, that would mean two or three more cups of beans per day--i.e., doubling my portion size. So that sounds about right.

Moreover, it just sounds much more logical and thoughtful than the traditional bodybuilding mantra of bulk/cut ommm, bulk/cut ommm. That yoyo-ing never made sense to me. I always thought there must be some happy medium so that you do not have to stuff your face and then deprive yourself in cycles; there must be a way to give yourself just the right amount of energy to get the job done without having surplus.

Eating 5-6 times in a day will help in getting bigger muscles etc... Power lifters eat alot...body builders are more finicky about eating..and they measure everything. You eat according to what you want...and how you lift. Eating those 5-6 meals in a day does not mean stuffing yourself 5-6 times a day...just eat throughout the day to keep hunger under control...and take in protein at every "meal"...Dennis

I ate 4,000 calories everyday for 2 months and I gained 25 pounds; mostly muscle with some fat; take the good with the bad.

Here is a great example of someone that stuck to the program, ate a lot and gained 60 pounds over a year. Check out both threads to see the change from a body weight of 175 lbs to a body weight of 235 lbs. In his first two months on the program he gained 33 lbs and got much stronger.

He ate about 6,000 - 7,000 calories a day including the gallon of milk a day. He stuck religiously to a program designed to increase strength and size - Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. He did not change the program at all...he just did what he was told.

To get big you'll have to work hard on getting strong, eating a ton of food and getting a ton of rest.

First two months

After a year
