    Default Fish Oil - Survey

How much fish oil, flax oil, borage oil, etc. - let's call them all Healthy Oils - do you take in the form of supplements every day? (If you're a regular eater of cold-water fish, the usual recommended source of Omega-3's, mention that, too, please.)

I am looking at a bottle bought recently from the local Whole Paychecks Market - it's molecularly distilled (that's what I find recommended), from cold water fish harvested off the coast of Peru, and also contains some lemon oil, also "mixed tocopherols (derived from soy to preserve freshness)".

One capsule is 1 gram of fish oil, said to contain 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA.

One thing I find confusing in reading on this subject is people freely associate 1 gram of fish oil and 1 gram of EPA/DHA - that seems not to be case.

I've been taking 4 of these capsules daily (2 AM, 2 PM), having recently switched from a "balanced" Omega-3-6-9 supplement because I gather that most of us already get enough Omega-6 in our diets.

Just curious as to what others are doing, any good articles you've found on this subject, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    I don't supplement. I eat a low fat plant based diet. I usually have a 3/6 ratio of 1:2-3:1. I don't eat grains, though.
If I add chia seed omega 3 gets even higher. Everything I have read urges that cutting down omega 6 food is more important than boosting omega 3 food. Just by not eating grains my ratio immediately dropped from around 1:10 to 1:3ish, but such an extreme cutting out of a food group might not seem worthwhile for those without celiac issues. Cronometer would probably be the most useful tool for objectivity with your lipid (and everything else) ratio's. Track in cronometer for a couple day's and see how you do; I think you'll come to agree that it is much easier to simply cut back or not eat omega 6 heavy foods like grains and certain nuts than to keep adding omega 3's.
Of interest, regarding fish oil and PCBS (a reason I don't supplement): Stiv J. Wilson: How Toxic are Fish Supplements?
Fish Oil Makers and Sellers Sued Over "Toxic" Supplements - That's Fit
    etc. etc.
For me its just too expensive to pay for a high end fish oil supplement. I think it's kind of foolish, knowing what we know about PCB's, to be willing to expose yourself to a concentrated source on a daily basis. In the name of better health? The risks outweigh any benefits, in my opinion.
A safer option is an algae supplement. Algae are where fish get their DHA/EPA etc. etc, so why not just get it where it comes from, cut out the middleman(fish) and get rid of any toxic load?

    Hope I helped some,
    Good luck mate.

An interesting reply - thank you.

In some quick reading, algae sources of Omega-3 seem to have lots of DHA but little or no EPA. Does anyone know what that might mean in terms of human health?

As to pollutants in fish oil, I think the "molecularly distilled" process is supposed to take care of that.

I think my current bottle of fish oil is the same one you mention Steve. 1000mg (180mg EPA & 120mg DHA). It's the 365 brand from Whole Paycheck. It's actually pretty affordable. I've found fish oil with a similar breakdown at the local Costco as well, but it didn't seem like the price difference was that huge.

I was taking 9 of these a day for a while...3 with each meal. Bottles were going really fast though and I'm on a semi budget so I've dropped down to 6 a day currently.

Mostly I just followed Dan John's advice and just took a lot. I've been doing this every day for at least a year now, maybe a bit longer.

For what it's worth I feel great! lol.

Steve, i never ever get fishoil that's less than about 2/3 EPA/DHA to 1/3 other oil in 1g. what you have is typical but way too low. it should be easily double that in 1000mg

Generally speaking i'm heading for 1-2 g of DHA/epa a day - with the 1g of DHA mark being the Sweet Spot - since EPA can be derived from DHA (harder to get DHA from ALA so i like algae sources)

I down 2 1000mg caps daily. 33% EPA, 22% DHA, 2% DPA. No idea what the rest of it is

    High quality stuff too.

Other than that I do eat fish pretty much er'day. I would eat it more often if we had better fish stores nearby.. I have a thing for fish stores and vivid memories of them from my childhood. So going into the local one with maybe just 10 kinds of fish and so-so quality is a bit meeeh.

mc, 1 gram of DHA would mean 7 or 8 of what I take. I might try upping my intake from 4 to 6 per day of what I've got, and I'm going to consider taking some of my healthy oils from algae the next time I buy a bottle.

There is a brand from the UK that looks very good and ships internationally:

Fish Oil Epa Dha Capsules |omega 3 fish oils Cod Liver oil PuraEpa

No one mentions flax oil - any reason? That used to be high on the recommended lists.
