I've been trying some undereating during the day recently because my job is physical labor. It's worked out great so far! I've seen fat loss and a little muscle growth.

In Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes he discusses under eating. According to the research he cited for long term health it is actually better to fast completely than to under eat. I don't have my copy of the book anymore (my brother lost it), but IIRC the fasting group in one study lost more fat than muscle compared to the 600 cal/day group. They also returned to normal metabolism while the under eating group ended up with a basically permanently lowered metabolic rate.

If you are going to fast I would go all or nothing and if you do eat something avoid carbohydrates like the plague as they will mess with your blood sugar. A friend of mine did a 5 day fast where several times of day he would drink some mixture of maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper. The whole time all my friends avoided him because he was crazy grouchy from his blood sugar spiking and then dropping like a stone.

I just watched a video this morning about intermittent fasting. It is about 45 minutes long but worth watching if you are into IF. It is a BBC video you can find here. There are 3 videos and the link on my facebook page automatically started each video after the last one ended, so I'm not sure if this link does the same thing. I got it directly from YouTube.

About the video the guy who is looking into IF goes to 3 different places to find out about IF-ing and how to lower his IGF-1 levels. The first researcher tells him to fast for 3 1/2 days every 3 to 4 months. The second researcher tells him to eat normal 5 days and fast 2 days. The last researcher tells him on his fast days to eat 600 calories and then on his feed days to eat what ever he wants, which the research calls alternate day fasting (ADF).

And here is an article that was published on BBC news about the same guy in the video:

They say nothing about the intermittent fasting that I'm assuming most do here where they fast from 16 - 24 hours per day. But I thought some might be interested in the video and article.

I hope you understand that I'm speaking of under eating during the day and eating a massive meal at night! I follow Ori Hofmeklers protocols mostly.
