Default Can Qigong exercises build lean muscle?

Is it possible for Qigong exercises to build muscle? I am limited in the amount of time I can work out in a day and I am trying to get the best of all worlds. I would like to increase health, longetivity and muscle tone. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't think so. Not enough physical excercise to improve lean muscule tone. Perhaps some power building excercises from Nei Ja Chuan styles and help. Most Chinese are not concerned with looks and more concerned with eficiency in movement, alignment, all combined with breath training. Muscle mass or lean muscles are not valued much. The exception in the extensivee leg training in Internal styles such as Chen Tai Chi, Pa Kua, Hsin Yi and Liuhebafachuan. Again looks are not the issue, but a strong base and root are basic as a launching pad, along with a strong and flexible waist. In the West, upper body strength is values and in China, lower body strength is more empahsised.

If you are short on time, Qigong may not be best for you, most exercises need to be done for 10-20 for beginners, and add time as you get better. It is efective for heath, no doubt there, but other options may be better for overall conditioning and heath benefits (kettlebells!).

You might want to investigate the 'dynamic tension' version (there are several other versions) of the Muscle Change Classic (Yi Jin Jing). I've played with it off and on for years and quite like the way it builds energy into the upper body (it's a lot like the 'muscle control' exercises the old time strongmen like Sandow and Maxick used to supplement their training.) Yang Jwing-Ming has pictures of this version in his 'QiGong - Health and Martial Arts'. Also, the '18 Buddha Hands' material offered by Dragondoor is an excellent full body workout with great health benefits. Neither of these methods will add any inches to your arms, but will calm the nerves, improve your muscle tone and build your health. Also Green Dragon Studio offers several videotapes containing health and muscle building Kung Fu sets, some of which are pure exercise, some of which have fighting applications. Green Dragon doesn't seem to have a Web Site, but they advertise in "Inside Kung Fu" magazine.
