I was surfing the internet about how to increase testosterone with regards to improving my strength - and came upon the subject of "Nofap". Now, let me apologize right now if this is offensive to anyone. My apologies please. In a nutshell (no pun intended) it is the method in which men "retain semen" in their bodies - thus increased testosterone is achieved. The idea is - no porn viewing. And no release of semen while "solo". Thus "sexual energy" is directed into more productive pursuits and away from the loser pursuit of self gratification. This brings me back to my days growing up Catholic. I just knew I was going to hell. And the priest almost said so himself. Criminy, the guilt I felt....hehehe!!..but seriously I never heard of this "nofap". Anyone one with more to say on this?...Dennis

Just found out about NOFAP a few days ago. So, I'm no expert. Just wanted to research methods to increase my testosterone naturally for my strength training, and this NOFAP took me by surprise. I will say that with regards to porn - internet porn - that in my opinion there are many more destructive and dangerous consequences to indulging in it. Just the easy access to it is definitely not good especially to boys. Its like giving cocaine to a 12 year old. They become de-senitised to what is normal. Ted Bundy was a serial killer and when interviewed about why he killed all those girls, he said it was because he had access to Playboy Magazine. Suicide, self de-gradation. Destroyed lives and families. Decades ago if a young man wanted to view porn, he had to go to the store and get it. Or he hit the jackpot and found it in his uncles attic. Today 12 year old boys can view it on their PS3 in the privacy of their bedroom. This is destruction of entire generations of young men who may never marry because they can't relate to real women..Sorry for the pontificating but I only see a down side to internet porn for everyone ...Dennis

Limiting access to porn by age and internet porn in general are totally separate issues from semen retention. The latter is an ancient mythology from Eastern religions, most of which advocate for it as a key to spiritual progress. Modern science/medicine has some disagreement i.e. more frequent ejactulation=less prostate cancer risk

I think as always there's truth on both sides as well as missing info on both sides. Only answer to these sorts of questions I've ever found that I trust is to do research with your own body, really pay close attention to how you feel. Always! And feeling good is good. Feeling tired, low energy, etc, is not so good. That applies to most everything, sets/reps, when and how much to sleep, diet, everything...

There are legitimate arguments for limiting porn but I don't buy Ted Bundy's excuse. Lots of people had access to playboy magazines when they were kids and never killed anyone. There was something wrong with the guy.

Anyway, from what I've read, T levels seem to change with your mental state. When you win at something or accomplish something or see a pretty girl your T levels get a boost. When you lose at stuff T drops. I'm not sure how much this actually affects anything in the long term though.

There are also lots of things in the modern environment that suppress T and avoiding those might be productive. Sorry I don't remember details or references. I see stuff about that on T Nation sometimes or in health related articles I come across.

Also, in my very limited personal experience, T is over rated and over sold. About 15 years ago I tested as having pretty good amount but most of it bound to SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) and therefore inactive. I did all sorts of chemical manipulation including HCG injections, amortize inhibitors, etc. Ramped it up inadvertently to the point where I was way over the top of any healthy range for a month or two until retested and got results back. Zero difference in any symptom or life experience except perhaps slightly faster beard growth.

Your correct Geoffrey that there is truth to both sides. And to pay attention to how you feel. Its like for people who can drink alcohol their entire lives without any negative impact on their life and they can also chose to not to drink without missing it at all. Then there are those who hit the skids after only 2-3 years of drinking and are in trouble. I kind of get the feeling this nofap (what is the acronym for this anyway??) is kinda new and new agey. Maybe just a fad I don't know. It kind of makes sense in that if your energy isn't directed toward "fapping" that it has to go somewhere - and ideally toward something uplifting and useful to your life. I don't imagine most men feel good about themselves after a session of "fapping". Now, time for "too much information" -- I know that I don't. Okay I said it. More like a total loser. Doesn't feel like a testosterone boost to me...hehehe!!...Dennis

I'm not sure it's an acronym, fapping is a slang word...

The idea has been around for a long time but I haven't seen it packaged this way until today.

The internet proves that too much information usually is not a good thing. I wonder if anyone in the DD community has experience with this AND if did improve strength performance. Maybe its just a case of "don't ask, don't tell"..Maybe a text to Anthony Weiner might reveal something..hehehe!!...Dennis

Surfing around for info after reading all the above, found that "fap" is an approximate spelling of the sound made by a man masturbating in animé from Japan "fap fap fap fap fap..."

Just found this lurid bit of research that indicates that actually having sex (most likely shooting a load) increases T much more than just watching someone else (and quite possibly retaining...or not)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...e-levels-rise-arousal--visiting-sex-club.html

  • The rise in testosterone in those who had sex was 72 per cent, while it was just 11 per cent in those who observed sexual activity
  • Men's age had no effect on the testosterone increase - which was contrary to expectation.
Just guessing but wouldn't surprise me if pheromones had a major impact on T level.

I need to erase the tape in my brain. This is THE example of "too much information" (TMI) From Japan huh... No wonder the population of Japan is dropping like a stone. Too much watching and not enough doing..Dennis

Have also just read on internet from another online community - MGTOW - a mens rights group of some sort. Sounds weird huh? And they go into detail about Alpha, Beta, Omega, Sigma male characteristics. And that by going nofap a male could change many beta characteristics into alpha characteristics. They claim that with nofap your voice can get deeper, grow more facial hair, stronger and become more assertive and aggressive maybe become like Don Draper from Mad Men and be more attractive to females. This would be due to sperm retention in the body. Maybe this be the fountain of youth?...Dennis

And maybe pigs can fly! There's lots of opinions but look for the science. Go here:

Its like I said that with the internet too much information is usually not a good thing. Too many haystacks not enough needles. And combining ignorance with too much information which is inaccurate or half true is like a chimpanzee in a chemistry lab. Nothing good happens there...Dennis

Geoffrey I agree completely that the science has the final say. I would still like to hear first hand ...ooopps!...account from someone with actual experience. It is an interesting subject, but not everyone with credible knowledge is in agreement - such as it is there are myths, half truths and exaggerations galore. As Shakespeare would write "to fap or not to fap, that is the question" - Me thinks I got that wrong...hehehe!!!...Dennis

Do you mean actual T measurement which may or may correlate well with subjective experience since there are so many variables to the latter. And not to be discounted in subjective experience, hell, even in actual T blood level, is the neuroendocrine effects of belief (see anything by Bruce Lipton, PhD.). My best guess is that a person's mind/emotional state plays a much bigger role on the chemistry than most reductionist scientists would like to think. There's probably a wide spread (Oops, I said "spread") of experience vs chemistry

I was thinking of the overall experience affecting strength performance. But like you said there are other variables so subjective biases would enter in. Actual measured T results would say a lot here. AND like you said that the persons mind and emotional state will play a big role..especially if someone already has a bias one way or the other. People will make claims that will place "whatever" in a more favorable light. This whole subject triggered my interest because I initially thought of it as "whackey"...ooops!...and even a bit silly. But I was also interested in the strength/testosterone claims about it...Dennis

Even there. I have not research evidence but I would bet that strength and testosterone level is only loosely correlated. Testosterone likely will go up and down with mental states/beliefs, the mind changing and driving the chemistry. At least that's my bias. And I know from experience it works both ways, body chem also drives mental states.

Those who pursue this method have already have it set in their mind that it will do all they hope it will do. For decades football coaches and boxing coaches have always admonished their athletes not to engage in any sexual activity prior to a big game or match. So this line of thinking about abstinence goes way back...Dennis

On the other side of the coin my guess would be that those who engage in masturbation while viewing porn probably have lower testosterone due to the fact that activity of viewing internet porn is such a dirtbag preoccupation and is completely time wasting and unproductive in every regard. How can a man be/feel like a man if he acts like a 14 year old boy? No rational right thinking man should feel good about himself after he behaves like that. This is all just my opinion, but some may say that this activity actually boosts testosterone levels...Just saying...Dennis
